Vice President, Development
Position

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President (VP), Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Out in National Security. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build ONS’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The VP, Development will also design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support. The VP, Development will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $10,000 budget to a budget of $250,000 or more through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. They will expand and diversify ONS donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives.

It is expected that the amount raised by ONS will increase in future years as the VP, Development systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity.

Responsibilities
  • Support and partner with the CEO and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to develop and implement ONS’s financial strategy.
  • Actively work with the CEO and leadership team to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.
  • Have primary responsibility for development and execution of all proposals; write and archive all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach.
  • Oversee research funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position ONS ahead of major funding changes or trends.
  • Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program.
  • Identify, develop, and mentor the development team.
Qualifications
  • 5-7-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).
  • Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside ONS.
  • High energy and passion for ONS mission is essential.
  • Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plan.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Customer focus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.
Volunteer Experience and Expectations
  • Part time volunteer (estimated 5-7 hrs/week at most) with the possibility of stipend and full time work in the future.
  • Fully remote, with preference for the Washington, DC metro area.
  • Expected to attend leadership coordination meetings every-other-week.
  • Expected to convene development team meetings on a regular interval.
  • Expected to conduct one-on-one meetings with each direct report on a regular basis
  • Expected to support other ONS meetings and events on an ad-hoc basis as available and as situations warrant.

Vice President, Public Policy
Position

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President (VP), Public Policy serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Out in National Security. In partnership with the leadership team, the VP will be responsible for leading ONS’s strategic plan with regard to advocacy at all levels of government.

Responsibilities
  • Develops the advocacy agenda, setting priorities and addressing key issues for Out in National Security and its constituents.
  • Oversees issue development for ONS and advises the leadership team on setting the ONS’s public policy priorities and strategies.
  • Leads the public policy team on advocacy efforts at all levels of government.
  • Supervises the development of issues and conducts member advocacy trips to the Hill and relevant cabinet agencies.
  • Coordinates with other organizations and strategic partners on shared policy priorities.
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the public policy program.
  • Identify, develop, and mentor the public policy team.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; post-graduate degree preferred – Masters, J.D. or MBA Minimum of seven years experience in political, government affairs or related industry
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with staff supervision, project management, policy analysis and issue development
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and be a team player
  • Ability to produce a large quantity of work at high quality
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with volunteers and staff at all levels

Communications Associate
Position

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Associate will be responsible for ongoing ONS communications efforts and will contribute to ONS’s organizational strategic communication efforts. The Communications Associate will be responsible for the execution, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership.
The goal is to advance the organization’s position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization. The Communications Associate will be responsible for ONS’s varied and integrated communications products and services including: email newsletters and other online and print publications; website content; social media channels; media and public relations; and marketing.

Responsibilities
Communications Strategy, Vision, and Leadership
  • Execute an integrated strategic communications plan to advance ONS’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences
  • Create marketing/public relations campaigns that will allow ONS leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers
  • Serve as communications counselor to ONS leadership
Communications Operations
  • Develop all ONS print communications including the annual report, marketing collateral materials and electronic communications including ONS’s website content, email newsletters, and new media
  • Coordinate communications efforts as a support team for the entire ONS organization under the leadership and direction of the Communications team
  • Maintain communications tracker and editorial calendar for the organization
  • Execute the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning and staff development
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field is required, an advanced degree is preferred
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience
  • Experience in planning, writing, editing, and production of newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing literature, and other print publications and directories
  • Excellent and persuasive communicator
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical thinker
  • Passion for ONS’s mission
